Altra Paradigm 4.5

Updates to Altra Paradigm 4.5

  • Shortly after the release of the Altra Paradigm 4.0 comes a “halfway” update of the series: the Altra Paradigm 4.5. Albeit highly similar to the previous version, this new shoe has a significant difference as it is a shoe for overpronators. Both shoes may feature the same technologies but the Paradigm 4.5 is specially engineered to cater to runners with low arches.
  • Most, if not all, of the elements and technologies of the previous Altra Paradigm have been retained in this version, save for some few minor tweaks that improve on comfort and fit. The knit upper, the Altra EGO midsole, and the FootPod outsole were all present in the Paradigm 4.0 and have now made their way into the Paradigm 4.5.

Altra Paradigm 4.5 Size and fit

The Altra Paradigm 4.5 is a true-to-size running shoe for overpronators. The shoe offers adequate room along the midfoot to the heel and the toe box height is moderate, which makes the structure suitable for runners with low to medium foot volumes. The Paradigm 4.5 is available in Medium width for both the men’s and women’s versions.

Altra Paradigm 4.5 Outsole

The FootPod outsole technology from Altra comes in the form of a rubber layer that covers the underside of the sole unit. It is reinforced in the contact zones of the foot, giving joints and tendons optimum capacity for movement. The layout of the FootPod follows the shape of the human foot, which helps in flexibility.

The outline of the foot shape is done as grooves and shallow cuts that act as the gripping mechanism of the outsole that is adequate for road running.

Similar to the other Paradigm versions, this shoe employs the Natural Ride System (NRS). As the name implies, the NRS promotes natural mobility through metatarsal-specific shapes that assist foot mechanics.

The stability features of the Altra Paradigm 4.5 are manifested by the GuideRail and the StabiliPod technologies. The GuideRail can be found in the arch part of the shoe and it is designed to realign and help the foot adapt, keeping it stable during the ride and reducing the fatigue. When the foot gets off track, the GuideRail helps by steering it back.

Meanwhile, the StabiliPod is a supportive tripod unit that enhances the stability zones of the foot—the medial and lateral sides of the forefoot and near the heel— to maintain correct foot pronation and prevent foot collapse.

The main midsole component of the Paradigm 4.5 is the Altra EGO, a foam compound that intends to provide a fast and springy response. The Altra EGO is designed to perform more consistently compared to traditional foams, as it is better able to withstand extreme temperatures. The result is a high-energy ride powered by a lightweight and resilient cushioning.

The Inner Flex is a set of grooves across the length of the shoe. These details give enough flexibility for longer running performance. Altra employs this feature in many of their other running shoes, such as the Superior 4.0.

A knit upper makes up the top cover of the Altra Paradigm 4.5. Aside from comfort and breathability, the material provides support to ensure a secure and seamless fit. It is engineered to feel like a second skin against the foot.
